Warm up: Wildeboer, Spafforth and Soni fly
After yesterday’s fireworks, the second swimming morning is marked by regularity: no excellent exclusions, all the forecasts were respected and World Records don’t totter. We’ll have a whole afternoon to change the trend.

Five disciplines and 64 heats to select the athletes in competition. In the first event, the Women’s 100m Backstroke, British Gemma Spofforth rules the heats, setting the Championships Record and stopping the chronometer on 58.78: former Natalie Coughlin’s record is retouched more than half a second.

The World Champion in the Men’s 400m Freestyle, Paul Biedermann, confirms himself in shape after yesterday’s victory: the German easily rules the Men’s 200m Freestyle heats, placing himself before the “Baltimora Shark”, Michael Phelps.

American Rebecca Soni sets the new Championships Record (1:05.66) during the Women’s 100m Breaststroke heats. Good performances for the home athletes Ilaria Scarcella and Chiara Boggiatto, respectively at the 8th and 12th place.

Aaron Peirsol, the lord of the Men’s 100m Backstroke, preserves his energies for the Semifinals keeping a low profile with his third position in the heats. Spanish Aschwin Wildeboer (winner of the session and author of the Championships Record) and Japanese Ryosuke Irie placed before him. Mirco Di Tora gets the next session setting the new Italian record.

In the last heat scheduled in the morning (Women’s 1.500m Freestyle) the home favourite Alessia Filippi dives for the first into the water during the World Championships. Roman athlete wins her heat, but she has to surrender to Danish Lotte Friis (15:58.23), Chilean Kristel Kobrich Schimpl (15:58.75) and Romanian Camelia Alina Potec (16:02.21).
