Phelps' revenge
Four gold medals and a confirmation. Roma09 still stays under the aegis of Federica Pellegrini, who takes Italy to the second position in medal collection, with three conquered gold medals. The athlete from Mirano ruled the Women’s 200m Freestyle, setting the new World record and confirming herself as the queen of the World Championships.
Finally Rome has seen Michael Phelps’ smile. Yesterday he was defeated by German Biedermann, this afternoon he imposed his rhythm in the Men’s 200m Butterfly, taking the World record and his 17th gold medal at the Championships, deleting yesterday’s delusion. The gap from Polish Korzeniowski (1.72), says everything about his performance.
In the Men’s 50m breaststroke South African Cameron Van Der Burgh won a hard-fought race, outdistancing Brazilian Silva only for 9 cents. Also the athlete for South Africa set a new World record, overcoming his yesterday’s time.
The great performance by Chinese Lin Zhang completed the day: he demolished Grand Hackett’s World record taking it down for six seconds and getting a well-deserved gold medal: he preceded Tunisian Mellouli and Canadian Cochrane.
The afternoon was opened by the Men’s 100m Freestyle semifinal, ruled by French Alain Bernard, who preceded Brazilian Cielo Filho and Swedish Nystrand. Tomorrow the challenge between these athletes promise to be exciting. Another Final is the Women’s 50m Backstroke one: today Russian Zueva prevailed by a hair. She set the new World record (27.38) just after German Salulski’s one (27.39).
