A golden Cielo on the World Championships
Some moments stick in your mind for the rest of the life. In Beijing Cesar Filho Cielo, born 22 years ago in Santa Barbara d’Oeste, in Brazil, entered his country’s history becoming the first Brazilian to win a gold medal in swimming. This afternoon, in the 100m Freestyle Final, The Final, he overcame all the best in the world: Bernard, Bousquet, Nystrand and Hayden. But Cielo wasn’t content with the gold medal: he also set the new World record crashing the 47-seconds wall: 46.91 is the time that gave the first World title to the South American team.
The other afternoon’s races showed Libby Trickett ruling the Women’s 100m Freestyle Semifinals. After that, American Ryan Lochte took gold medal and World record, snatching it to Michael Phelps in the 200m Medley, where he defeated Hungarian Laszlo Cseh. In the Women’s 200m Breaststroke Semifinals, Canadian Pierse preceded American Soni, setting the new World record, while in the Women’s 200m Butterfly Australian Jessicah Schipper evidenced she’s the best. In the Men’s 200m Breaststroke, Sprenger marked the record, before Zhao got the title in the Women’s 50m Backstroke. Aaron Peirsol wanted to have his own back and entered the Final with the best time in the Men’s 200m Backstroke, while China won, with the umpteenth World record, a Women’s 4x200m Freestyle which showed USA and Great Britain (new European record) on the podium.
