Russia wins the first gold medal in Synchronized Swimming
First gold medal for the Russian Team that won the final of the Synchro Technical Team. Respectively, Spain and China got the second and third positions, confirming the result of the Beijing Olympics podium. The azzurri’s team finished only in the sixth position, behind Canada and Japan, in spite of a good athletic performance.
A large crowd on the stands accompanied all the athletes’ exhibitions, and particularly the Italian ones, whom performance was greeted by long applauses: the jury’s verdict did not satisfy the public.
Anna Nasekina (RUS), gold medal:
"You can always improve and you can always do better but we are very happy today. This is a new team. In Rome I am the only one who was part of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Russian squad although I did not perform in the competition. Yesterday we felt very nervous. Today we managed to calm down and to perform better".
Andrea Fuentes (ESP), silver medal:
"We knew it would be very hard to win here. Our aim was to confirm the second place we got yesterday at the Preliminaries getting closer to Russia and keeping China at distance. I have very good expectations for the Duet, especially for the Free Routine because we have a very nice coreography. For the Duet Technical Routine we would like to win another silver".
Tingting Jiang (CHN), bronze medal:
"We are extremely happy for this medal. We strongly hoped for it in this competiton. Now we feel very tired".
