Anas is a public limited company with its sole partner being the Ministry of Economy and Finance. It is subject to verifications and technical and operational monitoring on the part of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
Currently Anas has in course, on the road network of its own competence, works for an overall total value of approximately 12 billion euro.
The state-owned road network for which Anas is responsible consists of 31.115 kilometres of roads and motorways of national importance.
Anas manages directly a network of 25,420 kilometres of major highways, of which 1.267 motorways. Anas monitors 5,695 kilometres of the motorway network under concession.

The functions delegated to Anas regarding the network of highways and motorways of national importance are:

- management, ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of highways and motorways of national importance;

- adaptation and progressive improvement of the highway and motorway network, and road markings and signs;

- construction of new major highways and motorways, including toll routes, both directly and by contracting firms;

- information services for users, starting from signal equipment;

- monitoring of works being carried out by contracting firms and control of motorway management;

- implementation of laws and regulations concerning the asset constituted by major highways and motorways and safeguarding of traffic and signs;

- adoption of the provisions necessary for traffic safety on highways and motorways;

- creation of and participation in studies, research and experiments regarding road and traffic conditions
