Rome ’09 at the European Parliament
Yesterday there was at Bruxelles the presentation of the 13th FINA World Championships which will take place in Rome from July 17th to August 2nd. The European institutions were represented by Mario Mauro, Vice President of European Parliament, and Antonio Tajani, Vice President of European Commission. Rome ’09 was present with Roberto Diacetti, General Director of the 13th FINA World Championships, Lorenzo Ravina, Vice President of the Italian Swimming Federation, and Tania Cagnotto, three times European champion Diving, accompanied by her father and coach George.
The Director Diacetti expressed great satisfaction: “The presentation in the prestigious home of the European Parliament has allowed us to illustrate the big event in its sportive and social dimension: Roma 2009 will show, for seventeen days, a city which can offer a great sportive show and, in the same time, cultural activities linked to the Championships. I wish Italy and the other European nations to overcome the record of medals conquered in Melbourne: 55 on 195”.
Tania Cagnotto was enthusiastic: “Roma 09 will be like Olympics”. The Italian medalist made no predictions about his great expectations. She simply declared to expect great support from the Roman public. Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the European Commission, announced the Commission is going to support the Championships. Tajani said: “Rome will live another big event after the Olympics 1960 and Italia ’90. I hope Tania will obtain the world victory after the European one, and there will be many guys like her ready to give a good example in a such difficult moment. Roma ’09 will have a great importance not only for sport in the city, but also for economics”.
