Venues Competition Programme Disciplines History & Stats

Municipality of ROME

"Rome worldwide capital of swimming, once more in her history.
Fifteen years after the last competitions, the next summer more than 2500 athletes will meet in our wonderful city in order to compete in the five water disciplines: not only in pool but also in open water, in diving and in synchronized swimming. A huge and great event that sets us once more at the centre of the world attention.
I would like to remember an another aspect of “Roma09” not of less importance: the status of “great national event” includes the construction of new sport infrastructures, the improving of suburb areas and the developing of linked infrastructures. Rome will leave an important heritage to the city and confirms that sport is an important value witnessed by the passion of the protagonists and fans but also an excellent motivation to improve the city.
We wish that this could become the calling of all sport events, as additional value besides the competitions.
We welcome with enthusiasm the challenge of “Roma09” and we are sure it will offer a great show due to the excellent quality of the athletes competing, and we hope that all the fans of swimming and of the five aquatic disciplines will enjoy the heritage that this event will leave to the citizens of Rome."
Gianni Alemanno - Mayor of Rome
